Jozart to offer summer arts workshops for youth

Jozart Center for the Arts in California had a very successful winter/spring season and is gearing up for summertime. In line with their mission to preserve and protect the cultural arts, they will offer visual arts workshops in June for students in grades 3-8.

These workshops will introduce students to watercolor painting. According to organizer and Jozart board member Cheryl Lewis: “Students will learn how to mix colors and use different color schemes… they will learn to apply color using various methods and instruments including brushes, sticks and even fingers. Subject matter will include still lifes, landscapes and animals, with abstract painting an option if interest dictates. All of our teachers are experienced professionals.”

Two separate eight week sessions will be offered for students in grades 3-5 and 6-8, beginning on Tuesday, June 7 and ending on Thursday, June 30. Classes will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the month of June. The cost of the eight week session is $100 per student with an $8 lab/materials fee.

Instructors include the Center’s artist in residence, Dawn Andrews, and Joyce Gazdick, whose accomplishments include serving as president of the Valley Art Club for five years.

Andrews has previously taught at the Washington Arts Association, at WashArts and has offered workshops at her various studios – including one at Westerwald Pottery in Scenery Hill – over her over thirty year career. Andrews has exhibited work across Pennsylvania and West Virginia, including at the Sleeth Art Gallery at West Virginia Wesleyan College and the Olin Fine Arts Center at Washington and Jefferson College. Andrews studied art education at Cal U.

Gazdick  has previously taught continuing education classes at Cal U and middle/high school art classes at South Allegheny High School and Charleroi Middle School. She has also offered workshops at Center in the Woods. She’s exhibited art at Duquesne University, Water Works Gallery in Pittsburgh, Concept Gallery, at the SPHS Building in Charleroi and as part of the annual Valley Art Club Exhibit. She holds a B.A. in Fine and Applied Arts from Cal U and received her certification in Art Education from W&J.
